What Is a Cake Pop? A Baker Explains

I get this question all the time, and I love answering it.

A cake pop is fully baked cake blended with a touch of frosting, rolled into a ball, dipped in chocolate, and served on a stick. Think of it as a whole slice of dessert compressed into a few perfect bites. No plate, no fork, no crumbs down your shirt.

How a cake pop is made

In my kitchen it works like this. First, I bake real cake from scratch. Not mix, not shortcut, actual cake. Second, the baked cake gets blended with a little frosting until the middle turns rich and velvety. Third, each ball is hand dipped in flavored chocolate, so the shell cracks when you bite in and then melts away. Last comes the finish: crushed cookies, sparkling sugar, toffee bits, sprinkles, whatever that flavor deserves.

Are all cake pops the same?

Gosh, no. Most cake pops out there are made for looks. Pretty coating, lots of sprinkles, but one bland vanilla middle. The kind sold to kids who care about the color, not the taste.
