Gosh, the holidays sneak up fast, don't they? One minute it is back to school, and the next you are in charge of dessert for twelve.

I have been the dessert person in my family for a long time. So here is everything I tell my own friends when they ask about cake pops for the holidays. The dates, the easy math, and the flavors I would pick myself.

The short answer

Why are cake pops so good for the holidays?

Holiday hosting is a lot of dishes. Cake pops are none. No mess, no utensils, no plates or napkins. Nobody has to stand at the counter cutting slices while the coffee gets cold.

Every pop is sealed in its own little bag, so guests can enjoy one now or take it with them for later. And with 18 flavors plus a fall seasonal, the chocolate lover, the pie person and the picky nephew all get the dessert they want.

One pop is rich enough to satisfy like a whole slice. That is the whole idea!

When should I order holiday cake pops?

Order about a week before you need them. I bake every order fresh and ship on Mondays and Tuesdays only, by Priority Mail or 2 day air. That way your box lands before the weekend and never sits in a warehouse. So the day that matters is the Monday before your event.

Ordering 50 pops or more? Please allow a 7 day lead time, so add a week to the dates above.

The mail gets busy in December, so earlier is always better. The pops keep about 10 days in the fridge, so a box that shows up early is no trouble at all. Cutting it close? Call 844-YUM-POPS and I will tell you honestly what I can do.

How many cake pops do I need?

The math is easy.

12pops for Thanksgiving dinner for 10
24pops for a Halloween party of 20
36pops for an office party of 30

Feeding a bigger crowd? My guide to desserts for a large party does the math for you.

Which flavors should I pick for each holiday?

Pick flavors that taste like the desserts your family already loves. Here are my picks, holiday by holiday.

Halloween: the grown-up treat

The kids have their candy buckets. This one is for everybody else! Cake pops are wonderful for a Halloween party, an office treat table, or a thank you for the neighbor who decorates the whole street.

Each pop is sealed in its own little bag, so they are easy to set out at work and easy to hand to a guest on the way out the door. And our fall seasonal tastes just like a caramel apple from the county fair.

Also lovely: Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Friendsgiving: the dessert that travels

Bringing dessert to a friend's house? A pie has to ride on your lap, and then somebody has to find a knife, plates and forks. A box of cake pops rides in a tote bag and gets passed around the couch.

A dozen mixed pops lets every friend pick a favorite. No slicing, and nothing to wash when the night is over.

Also lovely: Cheesecake, Caramel Apple Crunch.

Thanksgiving: pie flavors without the pie plate

Somebody is already bringing the pumpkin pie. Bring what's missing! My pie-inspired pops taste just like the real dessert, only made from cake and served on a stick.

They are a lifesaver for the kids' table, for guests who are too full for a whole slice, and for anyone who wants a little of everything. Aunt Linda can have Key Lime and Banana Crème, and nobody has to cut two pies.

Also lovely: Cheesecake, Salted Caramel, Caramel Apple Crunch.

Hanukkah, Christmas and holiday parties: the gift that gets eaten

For years, my holiday gift was a box of homemade treats. A box of cake pops is that same idea, all dressed up. It works as a hostess gift, a teacher gift, a thank you for a client, or a sweet surprise mailed to family far away.

Planning the office holiday party? Wrapped pops mean no cake to cut and no stack of sticky plates in the break room. People can grab one between meetings or take it home. I wrote more about that in my guide to dessert for corporate events.

Also lovely: Snickerdoodle, Lemon Sugar Cookie, Dark Chocolate Raspberry.

Hanukkah: order by Friday, November 27

Christmas: order by Friday, December 18

New Year's Eve: something with sparkle

Dessert at midnight should be easy to hold in one hand, with your glass in the other. Pick the pops with a little shimmer and set them out on a pretty tray.

Dark Chocolate Raspberry is crowned with sparkling red shimmer. Birthday Cake is all sprinkles and shimmer. And Strawberry Shortcake is dipped in ruby chocolate. Pretty as a party!

How do holiday cake pops ship?

Every pop is sealed in its own clear bag and tied at the stick. They sit side by side in an inner box with a hole cut for every stick, and that box rides inside a sturdy shipping box. Nothing shows up broken or smudged.

Shipping is one flat rate per box. It is $15.00 for 6 pops, $21.95 for 12 and $28.95 for 18. When your box lands, put the pops in the fridge and enjoy them within about 10 days. Let them sit out about 15 minutes before you serve them.

Ordering for the office or a class party? Every box lists the full ingredients and the allergens. My kitchen handles wheat, eggs, milk, soy, peanuts and tree nuts, so please read the packaging and shipping page before you order for a group.

Not sure which scrumptious flavors to order???

Buy a sample pack of mini pops to taste! Mix and match, minimum 6 up to 18. It is 6 minis for $15, 12 for $25 or 18 for $40.

Order one now, find your favorites, and you will know just what to get for the big day.

However you celebrate, I hope there is something sweet on the table and somebody you love across from it. Happy popping, and happy holidays!
